Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) in 2022

In May, the 50by40 UNFCCC Action Group, co-chaired by ProVeg International and Humane Society International, submitted key recommendations for an urgent shift towards sustainable food systems to the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA). By adopting the KJWA as a landmark decision, COP23, held in Bonn in 2017, recognised the role of agriculture in tackling climate change.

The submission was supported by 50by40, Humane Society International (HSI), ProVeg International, Aquatic Life Institute, Brighter Green, Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), Center for Earth Ethics (CEE), Compassion in World Farming (CIWF), Feedback, Friends of the Earth (FOE), FOUR Paws, Global Forest Coalition (GFC), Real Food Systems, World Federation for Animals (WFA), YOUNGO and Zero Hour.

“The commitments made on the topics of methane and deforestation at COP26 are a first step in connecting climate change and food systems. However, food system commitments are lacking on multiple fronts and are not addressed well in most countries’ NDCs, especially in regard to the industrial animal and aqua-farming sectors.”
