Plant-based diets climb UN agenda: ProVeg International gains Observer Status at IPCC

NGO will be first organisation focused on plant-based diets to be part of IPCC process

Global food awareness organisation, ProVeg International, has become the first NGO focused on promoting plant-based diets to win Observer Status at the UN’s influential Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The IPCC brings the world’s top climate scientists together to advance knowledge of climate change through the publication of wide-ranging reports.

Although the reports are neutral – “policy-relevant but not policy-prescriptive” – they are an important tool for policymakers globally seeking to act on climate change. The panel’s most recent report was published in April 2022 and focused on mitigation, stating that a reduction in meat consumption is a vital measure to tackle the climate crisis.

“We are really delighted to be given Observer Status at the IPCC and to be the first NGO focused on plant-based diets to win this status,” Juliette Tronchon, Senior Policy and Public Affairs Specialist at ProVeg, said.

“Our involvement as an observer demonstrates the importance that the United Nations places on the role of transitioning to plant-based diets in order to brake and reverse climate change, which must become a policy priority for all nations,” she added.

Representatives of Observer Organisations can attend sessions of the IPCC and the plenary sessions of the IPCC Working Groups. They are also invited to encourage experts to review draft IPCC reports. These experts participate in the review process in their own name and not on behalf of the Observer Organisation.

Attendance at COP27

ProVeg will be promoting the importance of plant-rich nutrition as part of the Food4Climate Pavilion at this year’s UN climate summit, COP27, which is taking place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt from 6th – 18th November.

The Pavilion will bring sustainable diets to the heart of COP27 and highlight the need to transition toward diverse and resilient food production and consumption systems to avoid ecosystem collapse.

Pavilion partners, including ProVeg, will focus on proven climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions, including the shift towards plant-rich diets, adopting sustainable and resilient agricultural practices, and reducing food loss and waste.

With a strong focus on a just transition, the programme brings together diverse stakeholders to explore inclusive mechanisms to fundamentally transform food and farming systems to tackle climate, environmental and social challenges together.
