#EatVeganCake. It’s that time of year again!
April 16, 2019
Wherever you go in the world, you will always find cake on the menu. From Tarte Tatin in France to Tres Leches in Mexico, cakes are a staple sweet treat across the globe.
Traditionally, cakes have been made using an abundance of animal products, from eggs and milk to butter and cream. But eating a vegan diet does not mean you have to give up your favourite treats. Simple swaps to dairy-free alternatives mean that you can still enjoy carrot cake, black forest gateaux, cheesecake and meringue.
Simple swaps include replacing cow’s milk, butter and cream with dairy-free alternatives found in most shops and eggs can be replaced with soaked chia seeds or flaxseed, mashed banana or applesauce, to name but a few. These ingredients perform a similar task to eggs and help to bind your cake mixture. Egg whites can be replaced with aquafaba – the liquid from canned chickpeas – to create beautiful meringues. Trust us, they taste delicious! And honey can be easily replaced with maple syrup, agave nectar or sugar.
It’s the ELEVENTH YEAR of WVBS!
To celebrate the 11th Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale, taking place from 15-30th April, we’ve looked at some of the most traditional cakes from around the world and created 16 recipes for you to try at home, to make your vegan baking ‘a piece of cake’. Our recipes range from Japanese matcha cake to Australian pavlova.
The Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale is open to any group, company or individual, and you can raise money for any charity of your choice. Just makes sure all ingredients and packaging are animal free!
Your efforts so far have raised an incredible $440,000 for more than 30 charities, and last year over 100 bake sales took place across 27 countries and 6 continents, from the USA and Canada to Taiwan and South Korea.
Let’s make this year even more of a success!
