Coffee with Craig tastes our favourite plant-based barista blends
October 13, 2020
Following the success of World Plant Milk Day, ProVeg SA was approached by a coffee shop to explore which dairy milk alternative would be the best option for their customers. On World Coffee Day, 1 October, we gathered our favourite 6 plant-based barista blends and hosted a blind cappuccino taste test at Enriching Life.
ProVeg shares favourite plant-based barista blends
Craig Yeats reached out to ProVeg after World Plant Milk Day. He expressed disappointment that the coffee shop supplying his financial business did not serve any plant milk options. In celebration of World Coffee Day, as well as the final episode of his youtube series Coffee with Craig, we sat down to taste our favourite plant-based milk barista blends.
ProVeg South Africa set out to find all of the plant-based milk options available to South African consumers for World Plant Milk Day. We gathered over 80 different types of plant based milk, and tasted every one. Of the above, only 18 were barista blends that are specifically formulated to be paired with coffee. Considering the cost and variety of core ingredients, we chose 6 of our favourite oat, almond, macadamia and soya options to take with us to the blind taste test.
Our blind cappuccino taste test
Craig, ProVeg SA and a handful of guests previously featured on his YouTube channel, gathered at Enriching Life to perform the blind taste test. The baristas served six rounds of cappuccinos, alongside a selection of incredible vegan doughnuts from Grumpy & Runt.
Each guest was asked to score the cappuccinos based on presentation, creaminess and overall taste – with all of them receiving high scores. Before announcing the winner, we were given the opportunity to share why any plant milk option is more environmentally friendly than dairy milk. Read more in The Plant Milk Report.
