Spread the word: A plant-based diet is ProHealth
October 29, 2020
After the success of World Plant Milk Day in the media, ProVeg SA was invited to share the ProHealth benefits of a plant-based diet with the Step Up executive group. We tried tasty plant-based foods, and discussed how a plant-based diet has been proven to support specific health conditions such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, obesity and arthritis.Â
Disa FM features World Plant Milk Day
ProVeg SA was featured on Disa FM 95.9 on World Plant Milk Day 2020. We sat down with radio presenters, Dr Gerhard Kotze and Chantal Whites, to host a blind tasting of various plant-milk options available to South African consumers. Our taste tests were prepared beforehand, as seen on Instagram. Unlabelled glasses of plant-milk were accompanied by a photograph of the packaging of each product in order to encourage the taster to guess which type of milk they were tasting. The taste tests were intended to highlight the taste and wide variety of options available which include soya, almond, hazelnut, oat, rice, macadamia, cashew and more. During this campaign, we shared a wealth of educational materials about how plant milk options are ProHealth.Â
Step Up Executive Group reaches out to ProVeg SA
The Disa community is based in Grabouw, and expressed that they felt largely uninformed on the benefits of a plant-based diet. The presenters were impressed by the taste and diversity of plant-milk options, as well as the educational content that revealed the environmental and health benefits of choosing plant-based food options. ProVeg SA was then invited to present more information about the ProHealth benefits of a plant-based diet to their Step Up executive group.
Step Up is a ministry for women, streaming on Disa FM, Life TV, and various social media platforms. The Step Up executive group of twelve women gathered at their venue in Parow to taste food options and learn more about the health benefits of a plant-based diet. Each member of the audience received Golden Milk and refined sugar-free date balls on arrival. Golden Milk is prepared with plant-based milk and turmeric. Find a recipe to make Golden Milk with your own almond milk on our blog here.
plant-based is ProHealth
ProVeg SA shared a 20 minute presentation that focused on the health benefits of a plant-based diet. We started off by discussing the 5 Pros of choosing plant-based food options, and expanded on why plant-based diets are the most effective way to minimise your impact on the environment. We detailed the difference between vegan and whole food plant-based diets, as well as how to properly balance your plate.
For the highlight of the event, we dived into the evidence that reveals plant-based diets as a therapeutic intervention for specific health conditions. Members of the audience responded that they all knew somebody who had at least one of the following health conditions:
- Type 2 diabetes :Â A plant-based diet is a powerful tool for preventing, managing, and even reversing type 2 diabetes.
- Hypertension :Â People who follow a plant-based diet typically have lower blood pressure than those who consume animal products. In fact, the authors of a 2014 meta-analysis reviewed 39 studies and found that when compared to those who eat meat, vegetarians tend to have lower blood pressure.
- Obesity :Â A Physicians Committee study tested a plant-based diet in a group of 64 women. At the start of the study, all of the women were moderately or severely overweight. Participants followed two simple rules: they set aside all animal products and kept oils to a minimum. They lost about a pound per week, without calorie counting or exercise. After two years, they had maintained their weight loss.
- Arthritis :Â A survey of more than 1,000 arthritis patients revealed that red meat, sugar, fat, salt, caffeine, and nightshade plants (e.g., tomatoes, eggplant) most commonly worsen the condition. Research also shows that dairy protein may make symptoms worse. Another study found that a high-fibre diet lowers the risk for knee osteoarthritis by up to 61 percent.
We love sharing tasty plant-based food
Eating plant-based does not compromise on taste. There are so many great meat replacements, including Fry’s, available nationwide. We prepared a lunch of tasty Fry’s crumbed schnitzel burgers, as well as a Fry’s prawn-style cocktail with vegan mayo!
