TEDxCapeTown’s vegan Food Ethos
November 23, 2018
ProVeg SA was an official partner of TEDxCapeTown this year. This forward-thinking organisation has a 100% plant-based Food Ethos, according to which all their catering is vegan: from their internal team meetings all the way to their headline event!
TEDxCapeTown originally adopted a plant-based Food Ethos back in 2015, where they provided a 100% vegan menu for over 500 guests – motivated by environmental, health and ethical concerns. Ever since then, the organisation has stuck to their Food Ethos: even the team’s volunteers (many of whom aren’t vegan) get a chance to enjoy plant-based food at their team meetings.

This year, the team at Wild Plant-Based Alchemy was hired to do the catering for the headline event at the V&A Waterfront, Pause & Effect – and WOW did they impress! Britney Varley’s own homemade rusks, gluten-free banana bread, and fruit for breakfast; boerie rolls with Urban Vegan boerewors and Le Coquin cheddar, wraps with Fry’s beef-style strips, and Britney’s signature falafel & hummus bowls for lunch; and delectable gluten-free pumpkin-chocolate brownies from Martin’s Bakery for the tea break.

Since the food isn’t overtly advertised as vegan, most of the attendees had no idea that the lunch was meat- and dairy-free: the guests thoroughly enjoyed the food and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Several people were even overheard wondering whether the food was vegetarian or not – that’s how realistic the vegan “meat” and “cheese” was!
Hats off to the forward-thinking team at TEDxCapeTown who are making better choices, for a better future. We’re so proud to support this initiative!
