NGO welcomes Dutch Government’s €60 million for cellular agriculture

Food awareness organisation, ProVeg International, has today welcomed the decision by the Dutch Government to earmark €60 million to support the formation of an ecosystem around cellular agriculture – the technology to produce animal products like milk and meat directly from cells.

Mathilde Alexandre, CellAg Project Coordinator at ProVeg International, said: “The Netherlands has taken a bold and important step into the future of sustainable meat production by supporting cellular agriculture in this way.

The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report has made it clear that cellular agriculture is a key technology that could bring a substantial reduction in direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from food production because of its lower land, water and nutrient footprints. We urge other governments to follow the example of the Netherlands and invest in this emerging industry in a similar way.”
